This time the main character whom discovers Gamera is a young boy and the movie progresses to cater to that age as well. For most fans it's a treat, but if you were expecting a darker feeling (like was imbued by Gamera 3 - Revenge of Iris) you may be dissapointed. The 90s showed his darker and more developed side.

This is like a superhero origin story, how Gamera comes to be the hero he is, and he needs help from the children to achieve his greatness.
The kid is not annoying and is quite a good little actor as are his friends who help the little turtle (tortoise?) grow up to be a fireball spitting, world saving, flying Gamera!
